Unfortunately they are limited by their minuscule 26-inch diameter tires. Even small jumps in tire size result in terrible high range gearing. You may even lose the ability to use 5th gear on the road. Luckily the Samurai has a very unique transfer case that is easy to re-gear with near stock high range and very deep low range gears. Lower low range gears (numerically higher ratio) are essential for rock crawling. Our 4.16:1 gears reduce low range by 84 percent while high range is reduced only 12 percent. That high range reduction is the sweat spot for 29-inch to 30-inch tires. Choosing the right material for our gears was our top priority. Gears that perform well under load and street driving require a high-quality steel alloy material. We chose Japanese alloy SCM415 for its great strength and wear resistance. SCM415 outperforms the 8620 material in yield and ultimate tensile strength resulting in a gear that is less prone to chipping or cracking. SCM415 also retains its strength under high-temperature use. High carbon materials such as SCM420 or 8620 are not the best choice in our experience and opinion as they do not carburize as well and can become brittle. Advance Adapters Transfer Case Clocking Ring - 50-8604
Fits all transmissions that bolt to a Jeep Dana 300; California Residents: WARNING *Includes new input shaft. Since ground clearance is a concern for most vehicles, Advance Adapters has developed a rotation kit to allow the Dana 300 to be clocked at a higher than stock rotation. The kit allows up to four different rotations than stock. The adapter is .75 thick and includes a new longer input shaft for the Dana 300. The kit retains the proper spline engagement and proper indexing for the Dana 300 transfer case. Kit works on all Jeep Dana 300s with a 23 spline input. Will not work with adapter kits that use a 27 or 32 spline input into a Dana 300. Floorboard and shifter modification may be required.
